NSUM PRESS RELEASE

Puntland Administration’s Betrayal of the SSC People

Date 1 June 2011

Puntland Press Release posted on the Somali website Wardheernews on May 30th may be diabolical and despicable but it comes as no surprise given its history of betrayal and backstabbing. It lambastes the SSC freedom fighters, whom it depicts as “anti-establishment elements”, for “infiltrating” the area between “Puntland’s defence line at Tukaraq and the Lasanod district” with the intention on the one hand to “stir provocation leading to open conflict between Puntland and Somaliland” and on the other hand to  “divert Puntland Defence Forces engaged in a war against Al Shabaab terrorists in the Golis Mountains, west of Bossso”.

When all that the SSC liberation forces have done is to exercise their inalienable right to remove the occupying oppressive SNM secessionist militia forces from their own SSC regions, a number of incontestable conclusions can be drawn from Puntland Administration’s press release and its stab of the SSC people in the back at a time when they needed its solidarity:

First, it reveals in no uncertain terms Puntland Administration’s dismissive and total disregard of the SSC people, their aspirations and their struggle to liberate themselves from the occupation.

Secondly, it sees the occupied SSC regions as nothing more than a “defense line”, or more accurately as a buffer zone against predatory expansionist Somaliland.

Thirdly, Puntland Administration’s perception of the freedom fighters as “anti-establishment elements” – presumably against the occupying Somaliland – and its allusion to the fight against Al Shabaab elsewhere is meant to tar the SSC freedom fighters with the stigma of terrorism, plainly playing to the ears of the USA in order to solicit support for Abdirahman Faroole in the forthcoming presidential election.

Fourthly, Puntland Administration, having in the first place given away the SSC regions to Somaliland by failing to defend them, and far from having any intention of liberating them now or in the future, has now gone one step further by coming on the side of the occupying Somaliland militia to defeat the freedom fighters, thereby denying the SSC people to be free and to be part of Somalia.

Fifthly, Puntland Administration’s affirmation that the area of Tukaraq is its defence line, and by implication that the rest of the SSC regions are its buffer zone against predatory expansionist Somaliland, is an admission that the SSC regions are not considered part of Puntland.

Nothing is new about the above statements and conclusions. They have been the unspoken Puntland Administration’s stance until now. What is new this time is that they have been clearly spell out in a document emanating from the Administration of the Puntland State of Somalia. This blatant betrayal of the SSC people cannot be laid solely at the door of President Abdirahman Faroole. All the members of the Puntland political and administrative establishment hailing from the SSC regions, who have been conspicuous since the occupation of the SSC regions for their self-serving and slavish support to Putland Administration’s betrayal of their people, bear much of the blame for the SSC plight.

For the SSC people, this rude shock therapy from Puntland Administation should be a salutary lesson for them to realise that the time has come to wake up and end their delusion that they are part of Puntland and form their own regional administration. The alternative is the disappearance of the SSC regions and people as distinct entities of Somalia. Future generations will never forgive us if that was allowed to happen.

Northern Somali Unionist Movement (NSUM) is a grass roots Somali organization whose members and supporters hail from Sool, Sanaag and Cayn regions in the Northern regions of Somalia(formerly British Somaliland)  and whose clan in these regions do not identify with the one -clan-driven secession calling themselves” Somaliland”. NSUM stands for the promotion of peace and unity among the long-suffering people of Somalia.
